Editorial Standards

While It Lasts helps readers plan travel around experiences that depend on timing. That requires accurate reporting, clear information, and respect for the people and places we cover. These standards guide the stories we publish and the decisions we make as editors.

Accuracy & Reporting

We prioritize firsthand reporting and stories informed by knowledgeable local sources. Writers must distinguish between experiences they have personally had and information gathered through interviews or research. We do not allow invented experiences, fabricated quotes, or unsupported claims.

We check facts and practical information against credible sources, including official organizations, researchers, local experts, and event organizers. Writers are expected to provide sources and supporting materials when requested by our editors.

Timing & Updates

Nature rarely follows an exact schedule. Wildlife movements, blooms, snowfall, and other seasonal experiences can shift with weather and environmental conditions. Our coverage distinguishes between confirmed dates, typical seasonal windows, and predictions.

We review and update stories as new information becomes available, prioritizing details that affect a reader’s ability to plan or participate. Publication and update dates help readers understand when a story was reported or revised. Before booking, readers should confirm current dates, access, permits, and conditions with the relevant organizer or operator.

Editorial Independence

We may accept hosted travel, complimentary stays, tours, meals, or other support that allows us to report a story. Relevant support is disclosed in the resulting coverage.

Accepting an invitation or experience does not guarantee publication, favorable coverage, or a particular story angle. Our editors retain control over what we cover and how we cover it. Sources and hosts may be asked to verify specific facts, but they do not receive editorial approval over our stories.

Writers must disclose personal, professional, or financial relationships that could affect their reporting so our editors can assess potential conflicts of interest.

Responsible Travel

Our coverage considers how travel affects wildlife, ecosystems, cultural traditions, and local communities. We seek local perspectives and respect the knowledge, boundaries, and wishes of the people whose homes and traditions we feature.

We do not encourage wildlife encounters that involve harassment, baiting, unsafe proximity, or disruption of natural behavior. We consider whether sharing precise locations could put wildlife, fragile environments, or culturally sensitive places at risk.

When an experience involves changing conditions, physical demands, or specialized skills, we aim to give readers the context they need to make informed decisions and seek qualified guidance.

Human Authorship

Human perspective and connection are the foundation of While It Lasts. Our articles must be written by people and reflect their own reporting, judgment, and experience.

We do not accept articles written or rewritten by generative AI, or AI-generated quotes, sources, or personal experiences. Submissions containing AI-generated writing are rejected, and submission of that material ends our working relationship with the contributor. Writers and editors remain responsible for the accuracy and originality of everything we publish.

Affiliate Links & Sponsored Content

Some stories may contain affiliate links. If a reader makes a purchase through one of these links, While It Lasts may earn a commission. We disclose affiliate relationships in the relevant content, and recommendations must have an editorial reason for inclusion.

Paid advertising and sponsored content are clearly labeled so readers can identify commercial relationships. Advertisers and sponsors do not control our independent editorial coverage.

Corrections

We correct factual errors as promptly as possible once they have been verified. Substantive corrections include a note explaining what changed. Minor spelling, grammar, or formatting fixes may be made without a correction note.

To report a possible error, please contact chantelle@whileitlastsmag.com with the article title or URL, the information you believe is incorrect, and any supporting source material. We review concerns about our reporting and update the article when a correction is warranted.
